11 April 2024Post-Transplant Care: How to Care for Your Scalp After the Procedure
15 April 2024For everyone, hair plays a very important role in appearance. When we talk about it, we often focus on its aesthetic function. Centuries ago, women created unique hairstyles and cared for their beautiful hair at home, making it a popular way to enhance their image. However, few of us know how hair is structured or what additional functions it serves in our daily lives. Let’s explore this topic further.
Hair Structure
Hair is a product of the epidermis, made up of keratin fibers, which covers the skin of mammals. Each hair consists of two parts. The first is the shaft, the part of the hair above the skin’s surface, which contains no living cells. The second part is the hair root, embedded in the skin. The root is surrounded by hair follicles made up of the papilla and the matrix. The papilla and matrix form the bulb, which is the lower part of the hair shaft. The sebaceous gland openings are located within the hair follicles. Each hair strand consists of the medulla, cortex, and cuticle. Our hair color comes from a pigment called melanin.
Physiological Functions of Hair
Nature has provided us with hair for several functions beyond aesthetics. The first is temperature control. Early humans did not shave and were more covered in hair, which helped retain warmth longer, especially when outer clothing wasn’t available. Hair on the head protects us from heat in the sun and from the cold. Another important function is protection from mechanical damage.
Aesthetic Function of Hair
The last and most important function of hair for many of us is its aesthetic value. Hair has a huge impact on our self-esteem. A good hairstyle can boost our mood and confidence and even become an advantage. However, weak or thinning hair or a bad salon experience can significantly impact how we feel. Some people consider hair to be their “calling card.” Women and an increasing number of men spend hours in hair salons because everyone wants their hair to look its best. Each day, we lose between 50–100 hairs, and the condition of our hair is influenced by diet, health, medication, and stress. Taking care of your hair ensures that your hairstyle can lift your spirits and look its best for as long as possible. Studies show that most men notice a woman’s hair when they see her for the first time. Meanwhile, studies with women reveal that one of the things they envy most in their friends is long, healthy hair. If a hairstyle brings frustration, it may be worth consulting a specialist to look more closely into the issue.
